The European Union (EU), following the United States, plans to lift economic sanctions against Syria. This was stated on May 20 by the head of diplomacy Kaya Kallas before the start of the meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

"As for Syria, I hope that today we will agree on the lifting of economic sanctions," said Callas, whose speech was broadcast by the audiovisual service of the European Commission (EC).

She added that after the discussions on Syria, the ministers will have a "difficult" discussion on the Gaza Strip.

On May 13, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to lift sanctions against Syria in order to "give it a chance." He noted that he was prompted to make this decision by a conversation about the situation in the Arab Republic with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
