Experts named the causes of fish deaths in the Alatyr River

The environmental disaster in the Alatyr River in Chuvashia is connected with two factories located on the coast of Mordovia, Izvestia found out on May 20.
According to local residents, there were 13 species of fish in the river, how many of them survived is still unknown. Already 150 km of the coastal line are in the disaster zone.
"To date, it is known that the main source of pollution is the Kemlyansky distillery. According to Rosprirodnadzor, he continues to dump dangerous substances into the reservoir, despite previously identified violations," the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of Chuvashia said.
The company has only one sewage treatment pipe, which is used as a drain for sewage and waste. The emissions mix with the water and float further downstream, killing living organisms.
"These may, of course, be those substances that are associated with the production of relevant products. All the components of alcohol matter, of course, become toxic in one concentration or another," said environmentalist Boris Kokotov.
The second company that affects the environment is the Ichalkovsky Cheese Factory. The capacity of the sewage treatment plants cannot cope with the load, so the waste ends up in the river.
Previously, both companies were caught in environmental violations. Experts found elevated levels of iron in the samples, and they also found ammonium ion, the main indicator of contamination. Then the factories received only fines.
Earlier, the administration of the Alatyr municipal District of Chuvashia asked local residents not to eat fish from the Alatyr River because of its mass death. In addition, residents and guests were advised to refrain from visiting the river in the coming days.
