Work on the relaunch of the Russian national car safety rating Russian New Car Assessment Program (RuNCAP) is intensifying after a break caused by the pandemic and changes in the Russian car market over the past three years. This was announced by the press service of the Association of Automotive Engineers of Russia. She is working on RuNCAP together with the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart).

The program involves evaluating the effectiveness of the automatic emergency braking system and checking the safety of vehicles in crash tests - in case of oncoming, angular collisions with various overlaps, as well as hitting a pole.

Vehicle tests can be carried out on the basis of the FSUE NAMI Test Center, said Denis Zagarin, its head. Anton Shalaev, head of Rosstandart, said that RuNCAP needs to be recreated taking into account the emergence of a large number of new players in the Russian car market.

"The RuNCAP Committee sends inquiries to Russian automobile companies and Russian representative offices of foreign automakers about the degree of readiness of their participation in the RuNCAP rating in 2025 and their intentions to contribute to road safety in the Russian Federation," the Association noted.

On May 14, it was reported that as of the beginning of this year, almost 62 million vehicles of various types were registered in Russia. Over the past five years, the fleet of vehicles in Russia has grown by 6%. The number of passenger cars increased by 7% during this period and reached 47.48 million units.

On May 7, it became known that by the end of April, 102.1 thousand new passenger cars were sold in Russia, which is 25.5% less than in the same month last year. Haval Jolion became the Russian market leader in the crossover and SUV segment in April.
