Since 2010, archaeologists have discovered more than 120,000 finds in Moscow. The oldest date back to the 12th-13th centuries and are the same age as the capital, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.

Last year, archaeological work was carried out at more than 200 sites with a total area of 15.4 thousand square meters. m. — twice as much as in 2023, the mayor emphasized in his blog. Excavations have yielded a record number of individual objects — more than 13 thousand.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 4.3 thousand artifacts have been found, mostly fragments of ceramics and glass. Among the individual finds is a red framed tile from the 16th century with a complex ornate ornament, found on the territory of the Chizhevsky farmstead on Nikolskaya Street.

"Before starting excavation work, an assessment of the archaeological potential of the territory must be carried out. And if necessary, archaeological excavations will begin," Sobyanin said.

According to the mayor, in the new season, archaeologists will explore more than 200 sites in Tagansky, Presnensky, Basmanny districts, Zamoskvorechye, Khamovniki, Krasnopakhorsky, Bekasovo and Shcherbinka. The total excavation area will be at least 5,000 square meters.

Archaeological work begun last year in Kitaygorodsky Passage on the site of one of the earthen bastions of the early 18th century and the buildings of an Orphanage that arose here in the 19th century will also continue. Excavations will also be carried out on Yauzskaya Street on the site of the Semenovskaya settlement of the XVII century and the city estate, Timur Frunze Street on the site of the Khamovaya settlement of the XVII century, in Soymonovsky Passage on the site of the village of Semchinsky of the XIV-XVII centuries.

In addition, excavations are underway in Maly Kislovsky Lane, Luzhnetsky Passage and Nikolskaya Street. Among the new addresses are sites on Baumanskaya Street, Polyanka, Bolshaya Ordynka, Bolshaya Nikitskaya and Pyzhevsky Lane.

The mayor noted that thanks to the use of special greenhouses that prevent the soil from freezing, work continues on many excavations in winter.
