Rubio pointed to Europe's desire to continue the Ukrainian conflict

European states seek to continue the Ukrainian conflict, while the United States stands for its settlement. This was announced on May 19 by the American Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
"One of the cardinals I met with said that it is very unusual for us that an American president wants peace, and some Europeans constantly call for military affairs, as if the world has turned upside down," Rubio said during a dinner of the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees.
According to him, the American leader Donald Trump does not want to spend a lot of money on defense, because they can be invested in the development of the US economy.
The Financial Times newspaper reported on the same day that the leaders of the European Union (EU) were shocked by Trump's statements after his telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, including his statement about the possible abandonment of the role of mediator between Russia and Ukraine in resolving the conflict.
On the same day, Trump said that sanctions against Russia would not be tightened, as there was a chance to achieve a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. In addition, the American leader admitted that the United States may cede its role to Europe.
