- The United States has declared Europe's inability to exert even minor pressure on Russia

European countries are unable to exert any pressure on Russia, and their ability to influence Moscow is zero. This was stated on May 19 by Scott Ritter, a former American intelligence marine, UN weapons inspector in Iraq, and analyst.
"It seems to me that Europe has already realized that its ability to influence Russia is zero. That is, collectively, Europe is not able to exert even a little significant pressure on Russia," he stressed.
The analyst noted that the recent conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump is a death sentence for Europe's attempts to lay the foundation for a policy that Washington could join.
"Therefore, Europe is trying to lay the foundation for a policy that the United States could then join. But this phone conversation is a death sentence for such attempts. And, again, we don't know the details, but it seems President Trump is making it clear to Europe that his goal is peace," Ritter said.
According to him, Europe may find itself on the other side of the barricades in matters of US national security if it "does not come to its senses." Thus, the EU will no longer be perceived as an ally promoting common goals and interests, but as an adversary that actively interferes with American strategic priorities, Ritter added.
He also noted that Putin's current dialogue with Trump is enormously different from the contacts between the Russian president and former US leader Joe Biden. According to the analyst, now the presidents of both countries are not just talking, but finding a common language, addressing each other by their first names.
"The very fact that they talked about personal matters is that President Putin congratulated Donald Trump's daughter on her replenishment. Warm words were addressed to Mrs. Trump... This is a huge difference compared to former President Joe Biden, who insulted President Putin," Ritter added.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced on May 20 that Putin and Trump were discussing direct contacts between Russia and Ukraine. He stressed that the American side provided very effective mediation conditions, thanks to which contact was established. Peskov also announced the difficult work that Moscow and Kiev will need to do to coordinate the text of the memorandum.
