- Bloomberg has learned about the discussion of a multi-stage trade deal between India and the United States

India is discussing a three-stage trade deal with the United States, hoping to reach an interim agreement before retaliatory US trade duties take effect in July. This was reported by Bloomberg on May 20, citing sources.
"India is discussing a three—stage trade agreement with the United States and expects to reach an interim agreement before July, when retaliatory duties are due to take effect," the material says.
It is specified that in the interim agreement, the leaders of the two countries are likely to consider such areas as access to the market for industrial goods and certain types of agricultural products, as well as the elimination of a number of non-tariff barriers, such as quality control requirements.
The second stage of the negotiations will include the conclusion of a broader agreement covering 19 areas. At the same time, the final stage, according to Indian officials, will involve the signing of a comprehensive agreement. Negotiations are still underway, which is why it is not clear whether the administration of US President Donald Trump has agreed to a three-stage process of concluding a trade deal, the publication says.
On May 11, Trump announced plans to significantly increase trade with India and Pakistan. In addition, he noted that he was proud of the United States' help in achieving a ceasefire between the two countries.
