The current success of the Russian ballet in the world is due to Yuri Grigorovich. This was announced to Izvestia on May 19 by People's Artist of Russia Nikolai Tsiskaridze.

"Today's Bolshoi Theatre, today's success of the Russian ballet in the world is Grigorovich. The repertoire that he has created is, of course, a million times greater than anything that has been created in our country over the past 70 years," he said.

Tsiskaridze also said that Grigorovich was demanding in his work, "even folk artists walked on a string." But if he saw talent or loved someone who really did something well, then that person received boundless love.

"The order that he had, on the one hand, we all miss and miss him, because we all understood who was who. If we seriously talk about the importance of Russian ballet, then we can name two names — this is [Marius] Petipa (choreographer, creator of the classical repertoire, author of the ballets Raymonda, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, Swan Lake. — Ed.) and Grigorovich," concluded the People's Artist.

Grigorovich's death became known on May 19. The choreographer died at the age of 98. Since 1964, he has been the chief choreographer of the Bolshoi Theatre. Grigorovich is the author of eight original ballets, as well as the editor of almost all classical productions that formed the basis of the Bolshoi Theater's repertoire.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called Yuri Grigorovich an outstanding choreographer who embodies an entire epoch in the history of ballet. He also drew attention to the fact that the performances staged by Grigorovich at the Bolshoi Theater and on other famous stages of the world conquer the audience with their courage and are rightfully considered the standard of the highest skill and unsurpassed artistic taste.
