A car driver in Xinbei, Taiwan, ran a red light and hit at least 15 people, three of whom died. This was reported on May 19 by the island's Central News Agency (Focus Taiwan), citing local police.

According to the agency, a 78-year-old car driver surnamed Yu ran a red light near a high school. The incident occurred at about 16.00 local time (11.00 Moscow time) at the moment when the students were returning home after completing classes.

"According to police, Yu's car hit three motorcycles and one bicycle at an intersection, then continued along 132 Fuxing Street Lane and stopped only after hitting the dividing island," the material says.

As a result of the incident, 15 people, most of them schoolchildren, received injuries of varying severity. The injured were taken to local hospitals, the agency said.

"As of 18.30 (13.30 Moscow time — ed.), three people, including a woman of about 40 years old and two girls of about 10 years old, died from their injuries," the publication added.

The publication stressed that an investigation is underway into the incident.
