The reasons for the weak development of the electric vehicle market in Russia are given

Weak charging infrastructure is the main obstacle to the development of the electric car market in Russia. This was announced in his Telegram channel on May 19 by Sergey Tselikov, director of the Autostat analytical agency, based on the results of a survey conducted among Russians.

So, when asked what factors are slowing down sales of new electric cars in Russia, more than half of the respondents (57%) named the charging infrastructure. They consider the price of such cars to be the second most important factor — one in three respondents (34%) said that prices for electric cars are significantly higher than their gasoline counterparts.

One in five respondents (22%) cited the fear of potential buyers of new and unknown electric cars as the reason. The same percentage of Russians believe that electric cars are a dead-end branch of the automotive industry. Only 8% of respondents are concerned about the lack of mass-produced Russian models.

"The comments revealed another reason for the reluctance to switch to an electric car. This is its "inferiority" against the usual gasoline counterpart. Many consider an electric car to be a purely urban car. And for traveling and trips to nature, it is necessary to have a second car in the family," said Tselikov.

On May 13, it was reported that 2,647 electric vehicles were sold in Russia in the first four months of 2025. This is three times less than in the same period last year (8,126 units). The leader in sales was the Zeekr 001 with 518 units. Avatr is in second place, with a circulation of 218 units. The third was the domestic Evolute I-Pro (208 units).

On April 29, the Kaliningrad Avtotor plant announced the launch of production of a new line of compact electric vehicles under the Eonyx brand. It will include two models. A presentation will be held in the second quarter of this year, at which the recommended prices for both cars will be announced.
