In Russia, the introduction of the status of a foreign agent is a mirror measure, as well as a way to protect the sovereignty of the country. This was announced on May 19 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, at the session of the XIII St. Petersburg International Legal Forum "Institute of a Foreign Agent. World experience".

"I will briefly answer the question right away whether this is a mirror measure or a way to protect sovereignty — both. First of all, this is a mirror measure," RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.

According to her, this status is a retaliatory protective measure, specially developed taking into account international experience. In addition, this measure is not intended to discriminate against people based on political criteria.

On April 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law recognizing as foreign agents those who assist international organizations in which Russia does not participate. He also signed a law that prohibits foreign agents from holding positions in the governing bodies of state corporations.
