- The Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation proposed to toughen the punishment for desecration of military graves

The Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation has proposed to tighten criminal liability for desecration of military graves, memorial structures and facilities. This was announced on May 19 by the first Deputy Minister of Justice Yevgeny Zabarchuk.
"Currently, the Ministry of Justice has submitted to the government a draft federal law, which was submitted to the State Duma, on amendments to the criminal Code, which are aimed at improving the level of criminal protection of military graves, memorial structures and facilities," he said during the session "The right is ours: The Year of Defender of the Fatherland" of the St. Petersburg International the Law Forum (SPIEF).
According to him, since February 2022, over 370 cases of desecration of military graves and other objects erected in memory of those who died defending the Fatherland have been recorded in Russia. At the same time, Zabarchuk clarified that the relevant cases do not receive a proper criminal law assessment.
On May 10, minors trampled the flag with the St. George ribbon in Obninsk. After the widespread dissemination of footage of the incident on the Internet, the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia organized an inspection.
The next day, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported that the parents of the attackers had only recently obtained Russian citizenship. At that time, the department announced its intention to assess the parents' acquisition of citizenship by minors as part of a criminal investigation under Article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Negligence").
