Over the past weekend (May 17-19), 665 road accidents were recorded on Russian roads, in which 66 people were killed and 845 injured. This was reported to Izvestia on May 19 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

26 accidents involving buses were recorded, in which one person was killed, and 40 more road users were injured. The reason for 13 incidents were traffic violations committed by bus drivers.

So, at 37 km of the M-5 Ural highway, the driver of a regular bus with 20 passengers crashed into a truck with a semi-trailer that was parked in the third lane after an earlier accident. Because of this accident, the driver and 12 passengers of the bus, one of whom is a minor, were injured and were hospitalized.

As a result of 153 accidents, 56 of which occurred at pedestrian crossings and 97 outside their area of operation, 16 pedestrians were killed and another 150 were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured are 37 children under the age of 16, 26 of whom were injured while crossing the roadway in unidentified locations.

123 accidents involving minors were registered, as a result of which two children died, and 144 more young road users were injured in various degrees of severity.

The accidents in which the child passengers died occurred over the weekend in the Pskov and Kursk regions. So, in the evening, on the 636 km of the Ustyuzhna-Krestsy-Yazhelbitsy — Velikiye Luki — Nevel highway in the Pskov region, the driver of a foreign car, whose driver's license was never issued, drove off the road to the right in the course of traffic, followed by a collision with a tree. As a result of the accident, two passengers were killed, including the two-year-old son of the culprit of the car accident (he was in the front passenger seat in his mother's arms). The driver was hospitalized with injuries.

Also, on 6 km of the Kursk-Ponyri highway, a passenger car driver with less than two years of driving experience drove off the road to the left in the course of traffic, followed by a rollover. As a result of the accident, a 15-year-old passenger, who was in the back seat and wearing a seat belt, died. The culprit of the car accident and two of his passengers were injured and were hospitalized.

In addition, due to the flood situation in the country's regions, temporary traffic closures remain in place. Thus, traffic on sections of 12 highways of regional significance has been temporarily suspended in the Tyumen Region.

The State Traffic Inspectorate reminded about the inadmissibility of driving a vehicle without studying at a driving school, successfully passing exams and obtaining a driver's license of the appropriate category. The ministry urged to observe the speed limit in order to be able to react in time to a possible drastic change in the road situation due to pedestrians violating traffic regulations. And also slow down to a complete stop when approaching crossings and remember that the behavior of child pedestrians is often unpredictable.

"We draw the attention of motorists to the need to choose the safest possible driving model, especially if there are child passengers in the car, who should be transported in compliance with all applicable safety requirements. It is important not only to use a child safety seat and seat belts, but also to slow down and avoid dangerous maneuvers," Police Colonel Anton Belan, deputy head of the Department for Road Safety Promotion and Prevention of Child traffic Injuries at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, told Izvestia.

On May 16, it was reported that the number of deaths in road accidents on the MKAD in 2025 decreased by 36%. According to the Department of Transport, in January – April of this year, nine people died in road accidents on the MKAD, while last year, during the same period, the number of victims reached 14.
