In the West, Trump was advised not to threaten Russia with sanctions

US President Donald Trump should not threaten Russia with new sanctions during a telephone conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Ian Proud, a former member of the British diplomatic service, wrote about this on May 19 in an article for Strategic Culture.
It is noted that the American side has made several signals that it may impose new large-scale sanctions against Russia if the conflict in Ukraine does not end soon.
"That would be a huge mistake that would lock down the fighting for the rest of the year and leave Europe on the hook for a huge bill and political upheaval," Proud said.
According to him, Trump should not make the mistake of the administration of former US President Joe Biden and impose new sanctions if he wants to achieve a settlement in the Ukrainian issue and become a peacemaker.
Earlier, on May 17, Trump announced his intention to hold a telephone conversation with Putin on Monday, May 19. The American leader clarified that the topics of the conversation would be the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine and trade issues.
