Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting with US Vice President Jay Dee Vance in Rome amid the country's concern about upcoming telephone conversations between American leader Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. This was reported by The Washington Post (WP) on Sunday, May 18.

"Trump has made it clear that he will discuss with Putin the terms of ending the conflict in Ukraine, but Kiev and Moscow are still far apart on what would be considered a fair deal," the article says.

Zelensky and his closest aides want to make sure that the negotiations between Putin and Trump do not become a fait accompli that Ukraine will not be able to accept, the newspaper claims.

Earlier in the day, Vance and Zelensky met at the Vatican for the first time since their public spat at the White House in February. The two politicians shook hands, smiling.

At the same time, the British newspaper The Guardian reported, citing the opinion of Ukrainian officials, that active US assistance was extremely important for the Kiev regime in the context of the conflict with the Russian Federation. At the same time, the source said that Kiev intends to continue to maintain military ties with the West, even if Ukraine's neutral status is approved in a peaceful settlement.
