- The media reported on Hamas' offer to hand over nine hostages on the terms of the movement.
The leadership of the Palestinian Hamas movement offered to transfer from seven to nine hostages from the Gaza Strip to Israel in exchange for fulfilling a number of conditions, including the release of up to 300 of its prisoners. This was reported on May 18 by the BBC Broadcasting Corporation, citing a senior representative of the movement.
"Hamas has agreed to release nine Israeli hostages in exchange for a 60-day truce and the release of Palestinian prisoners," the channel said in a statement.
It is noted that the hostages will be released on condition that the units of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will be relocated to the eastern border of the Gaza Strip.
Prior to that, on May 11, Hamas representatives expressed their intention to release U.S. citizen Eden Alexander. Dmitry Gendelman, an adviser to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said that this action by Hamas was "a gesture of goodwill to the American side." The Egyptian and Qatari authorities also welcomed Hamas' decision.
On May 12, Eden Alexander was handed over to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The hostage transfer took place in the southern Gaza Strip and was carried out by the Al-Qassam Brigade unit, which is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of Hamas hostages.
