Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico underwent three surgeries after an attempt on his life a year ago, not two, as previously reported. This was announced on May 18 by the Deputy head of the Government of the Republic, Minister of Defense Robert Kalinyak.

"The Prime Minister underwent three surgical operations after the assassination attempt. The doctors didn't want to communicate because they were afraid. It was murder! Robert Fico's condition was very serious," the head of the department said on Slovak Television (STVR).

Kalinyak recalled that only two operations that the politician had undergone had been officially reported before. The data on the third surgical intervention was decided to be made public only after everyone made sure that the operation went without complications and the body coped with the consequences. He stressed that Slovak doctors had carried out all the interventions successfully.

The attempt on Fico's life was carried out on May 15, 2024, following a cabinet meeting. The prime minister went out to the audience who greeted him, after which several shots were fired. Fico suffered an abdominal hemorrhage due to his injuries. The operation took almost four hours, after which the Prime Minister was put into an artificial coma, and his condition stabilized the next day. On May 25, doctors reported an improvement in the prime minister's condition.

The shooter turned out to be a 71-year-old man named Juraj Centula from the city of Levice, who was taken into custody on May 18.

After that, on October 28, Fico reported that there had been a second attempt on his life at a public event. He stated that a man with a loaded pistol, who was trying to get to the event, was detained by law enforcement officers.
