Washington's owner noted the consolidation of the status of an NHL icon for Ovechkin

Russian forward of the National Hockey League (NHL) club Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin has written his name into history. This was announced on May 18 by team owner Ted Leonsis.
"[Ovechkin] made history by breaking Wayne Gretzky's record for the most goals scored, cementing his status as a true icon of the NHL and Washington," the businessman wrote on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Ovechkin has been playing in the NHL since 2005, Sport-Express clarifies. As Leonsis noted, the Russian has devoted his entire career to the Capitals and the city of Washington.
Alexander Ovechkin scored his 895th goal in the NHL regular season on April 6 in a match against the New York Islanders, breaking Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 goals scored. During the gala evening in honor of his sniper record, the Russian striker was presented with a kid. The gift was presented to the athlete by his long-time teammate, Swede Niklas Backstrom. He was also presented with a gold hockey stick and a premium watch.
On May 9, Ovechkin played his 158th career Stanley Cup match, surpassing the achievement of former Detroit Red Wings player Pavel Datsyuk (157) and taking fourth place among Russian hockey players in this indicator.
