An explosion near a military recruitment center in the Somali capital Mogadishu killed at least 11 people. This was announced on May 18 by SMS Somali TV on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

"At least 11 people were killed in a bomb attack targeting young recruits at the Damaanyo military camp in the Hodan district of Mogadishu," the publication says.

It is specified that the explosion occurred at about 09:20 (coincides with Moscow time) during the registration of recruits to the Somali national army. Previously, the victims received serious injuries.

Later, the TV channel reported that the explosion was caused by a suicide bomber. It is clarified that the security forces managed to intercept the attacker before he could reach the alleged civilian target.

The day before, a car exploded near a reproductive medicine clinic in Palm Springs, California. As a result, one person was killed and five others were injured. An NBC News Channel law enforcement source said that the target of the attack could be a fertility clinic. The next day, on May 18, the country's Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Pam Bondi, announced that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had launched an investigation into the explosion.

On the morning of May 18, the FBI declared the explosion a terrorist act. Akeel Davis, head of the department's Los Angeles office, clarified that the incident "is probably one of the largest bomb investigations conducted in Southern California."
