Polling stations have opened in Poland for voting in the first round of the country's presidential election. This was announced on May 18 by the TVP Info channel.

"From 7:00 a.m. (8:00 a.m. Moscow time), Poles will vote in the presidential election for the eighth time since 1989," the article clarifies.

More than 29 million Polish citizens have the right to vote. They will have to choose one of 13 candidates at more than 32,000 polling stations across the country.

Polling stations in Poland will close at 21:00 local time (22:00 Moscow time), after which exit poll data will be announced. The State Election Commission may publish the final election results within 48 hours.

If none of the candidates wins an absolute majority of votes (50% plus one vote), a second round will be held. It was scheduled for June 1.

According to recent polls, the representative of the ruling "Civil Coalition" Rafal Trzaskowski receives the most support. The second is the candidate from the opposition Law and Justice party, Karol Navrotsky.

Navrotsky is a historian from Gdansk, known in Russia in connection with the demolition of monuments of the Red Army in Poland. At him
There is a whole collection of performances against the background of memorials, which are about to be bulldozed, reports Izvestia correspondent Stanislav Grigoriev.

"Such monuments with a red star have no place in the public space of a free, independent and democratic Poland," the politician said.

Trzaskowski, in turn, speaks five foreign languages, including Russian, in addition to his native Polish. He advocates an increase in government spending on health and education, as well as the legalization of abortion.

In January 2021, when protests broke out in the country after the ban on abortions came into force, Trzaskowski supported the protesters.

In Warsaw, the largest Polish opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), organized a march of thousands on April 12. It is noted that the action took place on the eve of the Polish presidential election, the first round of which will begin on April 18. At the same time, the event is officially dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of the Polish Kingdom and the 500th anniversary of the Prussian homage (the vassal oath of allegiance to the King of Poland, the Prussian Duke Albrecht Hohenzollern).
