On May 17, soldiers of the 242nd Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 20th Division of the 8th Army, as part of the Center group of forces, told Izvestia how the cleansing of the Alexandropol settlement in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) took place.

"We moved from the landing straight to the village with a group of 10 people. The enemy was well entrenched, and it was difficult with him. The air was "dirty" — birds (drones. — ed.), lined with mortars. Then we split into fives, assigned the elders and moved: one group on the north side, the second on the south," said Private Andrey Azaryanskov.

The Center's attack aircraft were clearing basements and buildings under the cover of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Two enemy FPV drones flew into one of the basements where the military managed to gain a foothold.

"We put up a net at the entrance, one was knocked down, the second caught on the wall. The explosions occurred at the entrance, not inside. There were about five mortar attacks. We had to abandon one shelter and then look for another. They have already gained a foothold there, they were clearly standing there," said Private Vyacheslav Khusnutdinov.

According to a fighter with the call sign Tourist, many of the militants were under the influence of drugs. This was evident from their incoherent speech and stupid mistakes on the battlefield.

"When my group began to capture the left side of the lane, the enemy encircled us. But they didn't feel the fight. You fire at the enemy, you can say, from the stop, and he continues to move — no screams, nothing like that. It was clear that most of them were under substances," he said.

On the same day, the Ministry of Defense announced that units of the Center group of forces had liberated the settlement of Alexandropol in the DPR. It was also clarified that in the areas of five settlements of the republic, formations of four mechanized assault brigades, a marine brigade and a brigade of the National Guard of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were defeated.

Dmitry Borodavko, a soldier of the 242nd Motorized Rifle Regiment, told how he spent three days in a trench just a few meters from the positions of the militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) during the assault on the village of Alexandropol. According to him, initially he was in a position with a colleague who was given out by a triggered walkie-talkie. Borodavko reported that the enemy threw grenades into their shelter, and his comrade died. He was left alone.
