At least 16 people have become victims of the devastating storms that hit the US states of Missouri and Kentucky. This was reported on May 17 by The New York Times newspaper, citing local authorities.

Tornadoes that swept through Missouri and Kentucky on Friday killed at least 16 people and injured dozens more.

According to the newspaper, nine people died in Laurel County, Kentucky. In St. Louis, Missouri, five deaths were reported, and two more people became victims of the disaster in Scott County.

The disaster damaged up to five thousand homes in St. Louis. The city's hospitals have received several dozen victims, with one child in critical condition.

In addition, power outages due to the storms affected hundreds of thousands of people in the Midwest and the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States. More than 500,000 Americans from Michigan to Tennessee were left without electricity.

Earlier, in early April, 20 people became victims of storms and floods in the southern United States. The infrastructure of several states was damaged: roads were flooded, trees and power lines were felled. In just a week, more than 90 tornado incidents were recorded.
