Sustainable peace in the Middle East can only be achieved if the two-State solution for Palestine and Israel is implemented. This was announced on May 17 by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

"Only the two—state principle can ensure sustainable peace: Israel and Palestine must coexist in peace and security," he said during a speech at the opening of the 34th Arab League summit in Baghdad, broadcast by Al Ekhbariya TV channel.

According to him, in this case, Jerusalem should become the capital of two states in accordance with UN resolutions, international law, as well as previously concluded agreements.

Guterres expressed the opinion that the conference on the implementation of the two-state principle would provide the countries with an "extremely important" opportunity to come to an agreement. In addition, the Secretary General stressed the need to resolve the situation, noting that the parties are currently far from a settlement.

He also clarified that the international community currently bears enormous responsibility for resolving the Palestinian issue.

In particular, Guterres stressed that he insists on a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the immediate release of hostages without setting conditions, as well as the resumption of humanitarian aid supplies. At the same time, he opposed the displacement of Palestinians within the region and attempts to send them outside of Gaza.

On May 2, one of the leaders of the radical Palestinian movement Hamas, Abdel Rahman Shadid, announced his readiness to conclude a five-year ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. According to him, the side is currently awaiting Israeli actions. He stressed that the movement's position implies the complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza in exchange for the release of hostages.
