- Forecaster Leus announced the beginning of a magnetic storm period on Earth.

A magnetic storm has begun on Earth. This was announced on May 17 by Mikhail Leus, a leading specialist at the Phobos Weather Center.
"A magnetic storm has started on Earth. As expected, the space weather of our planet last night began to be influenced by the solar wind blowing out of another coronal hole on our star," he wrote on the Telegram channel.
According to the forecaster, the reason was a change in the configuration of the components of the interplanetary belt, which was caused by the solar wind. According to him, disturbances in the planet's magnetosphere reached the level of an average G2 class magnetic storm after 03:00 Moscow time.
Leus clarified that the world's forecasting centers predict that the Earth will find itself in a stream of faster and denser solar wind until Monday, May 19. So, in the next few days, the geomagnetic field of the planet will be in a weakly disturbed state and will be accompanied by short intervals of G1 class magnetic storms.
Head of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI) On May 5, RAS Sergey Bogachev reported an increase in the number of magnetic storms in four months of 2025 compared to 2024. According to him, this year the period of magnetic storms has already totaled 21 days— which is 2.5 times more than last year. At the same time, the expert noted a decrease in the number of solar flares.
