US President Donald Trump has said that a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine is impossible without his personal involvement. This was reported on May 17 by the Fox News channel.

According to Trump, negotiations between Moscow and Kiev will not lead to a result without his mediation due to the high level of mutual hatred between the parties.

"I think we can come to an agreement. We have to meet, and we will probably plan it," he said, adding that he maintains good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the American leader, his special envoy Steven Witkoff has done an "incredible job," but only he can resolve the situation. In case of failure of negotiations, Trump threatened to impose new sanctions against Russia.

On May 16, the Russian and Ukrainian delegations at the talks agreed to present their vision of a cease-fire and to exchange prisoners of war in the 1,000-by-1,000 format.

On the same day, Trump said he did not rule out imposing sanctions against Russia "if necessary," but would prefer to avoid such measures.
