Hungary's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Levente Magyar said on Friday, May 16, that the European Commission (EC) was guilty of not averting a customs war with the United States.

The Hungarian Foreign Ministry also called for reducing import duties on the American automotive industry as much as possible.

"This tariff war that has unfolded with America is extremely harmful to the European economy and especially to the Hungarian economy. We blame the European Commission for not starting negotiations with the American side on time, when they had just started openly talking about the introduction of these tariffs, for several months and years," Magyar said in a video message posted on Facebook (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).

He added that the EC should have established communication channels with US President Donald Trump earlier.

Earlier, on May 12, Trump called the US-EU trade relations disgusting. He clarified that the European Union (EU) forced American pharmaceutical companies "to do what they did not like to do." The Head of State added that European countries also often sued American companies, while resorting to using their own judges.
