South Korea's Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Dok Geun has asked U.S. official Jamison Greer to cancel all customs duties on South Korean goods. This was reported on May 16 by the News1 agency, citing diplomats.

"We have once again requested an exemption from all country—specific (mutual) tariffs and tariffs on products," South Korean Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Dok Geun said during consultations with U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer.

It is specified that the countries have concluded a free trade agreement.

Representatives of South Korea and the United States have agreed to hold the following "technical talks" that will address non-tariff restrictions and trade imbalances. The next meeting is scheduled to take place on May 19 in Washington.

On May 2, Prime Minister Han Dok-soo, currently acting head of state, in an interview with the Financial Times (FT) announced his refusal to resist import duties imposed by decree of US President Donald Trump. According to him, the refusal to resist tariffs is motivated by the fact that the country is in debt to the United States for the assistance provided in the middle of the 20th century.
