The United Nations welcomed the first direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul in three years. This was announced on May 16 by the deputy official representative of the UN Secretary General, Farhan Haq.

"The UN hopes that the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will serve as a critical step towards creating conditions for sustainable peace," the Secretary General's office said.
