The head of the Russian delegation, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky, said on May 16 that during the negotiations it was important to remind the Ukrainian side of the agreements reached in Gomel at the end of February 2022.

"It was very important to recall what we agreed on in Gomel at the end of February, and how it could have ended if Ukraine had agreed to peace at the end of February. They did not agree, they dragged their feet, and after that the next stage of the agreements was in Istanbul," Medinsky said.

Commenting on the approach to negotiations, he stressed that historical experience shows the possibility of conducting a peaceful dialogue even in difficult conditions, and the proposal to negotiate only during a truce is put forward only by those people who do not know history.

Medinsky said earlier that day that direct negotiations between Russian representatives and the Ukrainian side had ended, and the Russian Federation was ready to continue contacts. In addition, each country will prepare its own vision of the ceasefire and detail it, he added.

Prior to that, negotiations between the American, Turkish and Ukrainian sides on the conflict in Ukraine took place in Istanbul. Their conversation lasted about an hour.
