The negotiations between the Russian Federation and Ukraine were successful, as the parties managed to come to a number of concrete decisions. Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, shared this opinion with Izvestia on May 16.

"The negotiations themselves can be considered successful based on the fact that there are already certain concrete solutions related to the settlement of the conflict," he said.

The political scientist called it important that the parties were able to find certain topics for themselves on which to move forward in the negotiation process.

According to him, at the moment, it may be extremely important for the Ukrainian side to switch from a confrontational discussion to a search for a compromise. This concerns issues related to security and the political component, the expert stressed.

"The negotiators should prepare a number of agreed proposals that could be signed by the heads of state," Denisov said.

Political scientist, political strategist and publicist Natalia Eliseeva, in an interview with Izvestia, admitted that on the day of the negotiations, or in the coming days, it will be clear for sure whether Ukraine intends to continue negotiations.

Earlier in the day, the first talks between Russia and Ukraine since 2022 took place in Istanbul. The Russian delegation was led by Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky, and the meeting was attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Igor Kostyukov and Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin.

Following the talks, Medinsky said that the Russian and Ukrainian delegations at the talks in Turkey had agreed to present their vision of a cease-fire and exchange prisoners of war in the "1000 by 1000" format in the coming days. He added that the Russian side had taken note of the Ukrainian delegates' proposal for a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky.
