- The psychotherapist named people who are susceptible to the development of digital dementia

When people become too dependent on gadgets in their daily lives, digital dementia develops. The constant use of smartphones, tablets, and computers for information, communication, or entertainment reduces the ability to analyze and memorize on their own. Irina Krashkina, a psychotherapist at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg clinic), PhD, told Izvestia about this on May 17.
Digital dementia, or digital dementia, is a condition in which excessive use of digital technology leads to a deterioration in a person's cognitive functions.
According to the expert, a large amount of time spent in front of screens is often combined with a sedentary lifestyle, which negatively affects not only cognitive functions, but also overall health.
Krashkina noted that modern technologies create unique problems for our brain. The huge flow of information from the Internet and constant notifications make it difficult to concentrate.
"Due to the habit of using technology to perform tasks, for example, navigation using GPS or using a calculator, the ability to perform these tasks independently decreases," the psychotherapist drew attention.
Among the main symptoms of digital dementia, the expert highlights difficulties with remembering information that is not stored in devices, and difficulties with concentration due to constant digital stimuli. Many people feel anxious when they are left without access to their devices, and dependence on technology reduces their ability to think critically. Virtual communication is gradually replacing real social interactions, which also negatively affects mental health.
The complications of digital dementia can be serious. The therapist warns about the risk of developing depression, anxiety disorders and other mental problems. Physical consequences include ophthalmological diseases such as digital eye syndrome, as well as posture disorders and neck and back problems due to prolonged use of gadgets. Social isolation and cognitive decline can negatively affect all areas of life, from work to personal relationships.
Krashkina recommends a conscious approach to the use of technology to prevent and overcome digital dementia. It is important to set limits on the time spent with your devices, especially on social networks and messengers. Regular intellectual exercises — crosswords, chess, learning new languages — help maintain memory and attention. Physical activity improves not only overall health, but also cognitive functions.
"Try to establish more real social interactions by meeting with friends and family. Practices aimed at developing mindfulness and meditation can also help improve concentration and reduce stress levels," the specialist added.
She stressed that awareness of the problem of digital dementia and active actions to overcome it can help maintain health and quality of life.
Earlier, on March 25, it was reported that the majority of parents surveyed (65%) limit screen time to children. So, 67% explain this by the desire for children to relax without gadgets: for example, they read paper books and played regular, non-online games.
