Dentist warned about tooth loss due to "buildup" with gel polish

The trend towards "building up" teeth with gel polish is dangerous — such manipulations can lead to their loss. Veronika Melekhova, a dental surgeon, maxillofacial surgeon, and orthopedic surgeon, told Izvestia about this on May 16.
Earlier, videos appeared on social networks in which manicure masters undertake to repair broken teeth with gel polish for a small price.
"They can't treat the [oral] cavity properly. There are bacteria there. They'll seal them up. These bacteria don't like oxygen. They will begin to multiply at a crazy rate, many times faster than they have multiplied before. A human cannot clean them. And this is the development of complications in the form of pulpitis, and then periodontitis. And it can lead to tooth loss altogether," the doctor noted.
According to her, such manipulations can damage teeth and gums, cause burns or an allergic reaction. In addition, Melekhova added, the composition of the gel polish is quite toxic.
"You can't eat gel polish, but you can have a filling - let's start with that. <...> Plus, fillings are made of a special material that is biologically compatible with tooth tissues, which has a certain modulus of elasticity and expansion when exposed to certain temperatures, and it is close to the tooth tissues," the dentist explained.
She added that the gel does not adhere well to the tooth, may have sharp edges and scratch the mucous membrane if a person accidentally swallows a fragment.
"We have a whole series of protocols to ensure that the filling is properly glued to the tooth. This coupling between the tooth is not intended for gel polish, and the gel polish falls off under mechanical stress," Melekhova said.
Even if the varnish adheres well, it can only be cut down to remove it, and this will damage the enamel, the dentist emphasized and added that such "build-up" worsens rather than improves the situation with the tooth.
On May 5, Olga Chepurkova, Professor, MD, speaker of REVIXAN, told Izvestia that even with regular brushing of teeth, many people face caries, gum inflammation and bad breath. The main mistake, according to the expert, is the substitution of concepts.
The doctor paid special attention to the cleaning technique. She stated that about 80% of patients do not know how to properly remove biofilm, a bacterial plaque that becomes the main cause of gum problems.
