Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held a meeting during the summit of the European Political Community in Tirana, the capital of Albania. This was reported by the ARA news agency on May 16.

"In Tirana, as part of the European Political Community summit, I met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev," Pashinyan wrote on his Telegram channel.

As specified by "Gazeta.During the meeting, Pashinyan and Aliyev exchanged views on bilateral relations between the two countries and the process of concluding a peace treaty.

On April 16, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated that the country is ready to open communications with Azerbaijan, regardless of the signing of a peace agreement. According to him, if Baku responds positively to Yerevan's proposal, then Armenia will start opening infrastructure even before the signing of the peace agreement.

On April 12, the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry reported that Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov agreed to continue the dialogue on the peace process during a meeting in Antalya. They also discussed the normalization of relations.

Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan were strained, among other things, against the background of the disputed ownership of Nagorno-Karabakh, which in 1988 declared its secession from the Azerbaijan SSR. During the 1992-1994 military conflict, Baku lost control over Karabakh.

However, in September 2023, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry again took control of the region and demanded the complete withdrawal of Armenian troops from there. The next day, the parties agreed on a complete cessation of hostilities, and on October 5, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a declaration recognizing the borders of Azerbaijan. It also included Nagorno-Karabakh, but armed clashes still periodically occur on the border of Azerbaijan and Armenia.
