- FT has learned about Kiev's losses of hundreds of millions of dollars in arms purchases

Ukraine has suffered losses of hundreds of millions of dollars by purchasing weapons from dubious suppliers. This was reported on Friday, May 16, by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.
The publication studied Ukrainian government and court documents, conducted numerous interviews with procurement officials and arms manufacturers, and even talked to detectives, revealing that Kiev has wasted hundreds of millions of dollars since 2022.
"To date, Ukraine has paid $770 million in advance to foreign dealers for weapons and ammunition that were not delivered," the article says.
As indicated, in some cases Kiev has made large prepayments to little-known companies that have not yet fulfilled their part of the contract. In addition, the newspaper's sources added that sometimes weapons were bought at "extremely inflated prices," but they turned out to be unsuitable.
Earlier, on May 10, The New York Times (NYT) reported that European countries were seeking to arm Ukraine, but they did not have the ability to do so quickly enough. According to the newspaper, the so-called coalition of the willing has been having difficulty supplying weapons to Kiev since US President Donald Trump "made it clear" that Europe needs to take on most of the burden of ensuring its own security.
