Russian chess player Goryachkina qualified for the candidates tournament

Russian chess player Alexandra Goryachkina has secured her participation in the 2026 candidates tournament. This was announced on May 15 on the website of the Russian Chess Federation (FSHR).

The athlete took the second place in the Grand Prix series of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), scoring 308.34 points at the end of three stages. This result guaranteed her qualification for the tournament, the winner of which will receive the right to play a match for the title of world champion.

Together with Goryachkina, Chinese Zhu Jin'er also qualified for the candidates' tournament. The final match for the world crown will be held against the current world champion, Chinese Ju Wenjun.

On May 10, the youngest grandmaster of Russia, 14-year-old Ivan Zemlyansky, won the blitz championship, which was held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In the women's section, the silver medal was won by two-time world blitz champion Valentina Gunina, who was in the lead until the last round. Alua Nurman, a citizen of Kazakhstan, won gold with an equal number of points, taking into account additional indicators. The third place went to the representative of China, Song Yuxin.
