NATO countries are experiencing difficulties with the transfer of military equipment in Europe due to the deplorable condition of bridges. This was announced on May 15 by the Secretary General of the alliance, Mark Rutte, at a press conference that was broadcast on the alliance's website.

"Sometimes, when you drive across a bridge in Europe, even in a passenger car, you hope that you will be able to cross it safely. What can we say about driving a tank through it," he stressed.

According to him, NATO needs to focus not only on direct defense spending, but also invest in the development of infrastructure necessary to ensure the mobility of military units.

Rutte added that Germany is taking a leading role in the issue of defense investments. The NATO Secretary General called Germany the largest economy in Europe and the second largest in the bloc after the United States.

"I am confident that at the Hague summit, the alliance countries will commit themselves to ambitious spending both on defense itself and on other defense-related goals. <...> There must be a realistic way to achieve these goals. This cannot be done in one year," he said.

On the same day, Rutte said that NATO needs to develop the defense industry against the background of Russia's great success in this area. According to the secretary General of the bloc, the alliance must be sure that it spends enough funding in order to "protect itself."
