The purpose of direct negotiations with representatives of Ukraine in Istanbul, proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, is to establish a long-term and lasting peace by eliminating the root causes of the conflict. This was announced on May 15 by Vladimir Medinsky, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation, Chairman of the Russian Military Historical Society.

According to him, the Russian delegation arrived in Istanbul on behalf of the head of state.
