The United States authorities want to ensure that there are no "weak links" in the NATO structure. This was announced on May 15 by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

"NATO has the opportunity to become even stronger in the alliance. The alliance is only as strong as its weakest link, and we intend and strive to have no weak links in this alliance," he is quoted as saying on the US government's website.

He also added that US President Donald Trump has approved a defense budget estimated at several trillion dollars.

Earlier in the day, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the alliance needs to develop the defense industry against the background of Russia's great success in this area. According to Rutte, the alliance must be sure that it spends enough funding in order to "protect itself."
