Russia will take measured retaliatory steps to the sanctions of the European Union (EU). This was announced on May 15 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, answering a question from Izvestia.

"Of course, as you know, none of these packages remain without a proper reaction from the Russian side. Measured retaliatory measures that take into account, first of all, our interests, the interests of our country and its citizens will be taken, I say again, in response to such actions in the future," she said at a briefing.

On the same day, Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen announced that the EU would immediately begin developing the 18th package of sanctions against Russia. According to her, the adoption of the 17th package was the right decision.

On May 14, the AFP news agency reported that the EU ambassadors had agreed on the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. Russian vessels, as well as companies from China, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Serbia, Vietnam and Uzbekistan will be sanctioned.
