Inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have been hearing explosions near the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) every day over the past week. This was announced on May 15 by the Director General of the agency, Rafael Grossi.

"The IAEA team reported that they had heard explosions every day for the past week at some distance from the nuclear power plant," he is quoted as saying on the organization's website.

According to Grossi, cooperation with Russia and Ukraine is currently continuing in order to organize the next rotation of IAEA experts at the plant, which was postponed due to the complication of the situation at the nuclear power plant.

In addition, the statement clarified that the nuclear safety of the plant is under threat due to unstable external power supply. Currently, there is only one power transmission line in operation to provide basic nuclear safety functions.

At the same time, Grossi said that the external power supply to the plant was unstable throughout the entire Ukrainian conflict.

On May 6, Sergey Kiriyenko, First Deputy head of the Presidential Administration of the Russian Federation, said that the main task of the NPP employees was to ensure the safety of the plant's operation. According to the press service of the NPP, at the moment all six units of the power plant are in a state of "cold shutdown".

Prior to that, on April 18, Rostechnadzor, together with the IAEA, monitored the operational condition of the turbine department equipment of two NPP power units. It was clarified that the radiation background at the site and in the observation area is normal and does not exceed natural values.
