During a test launch of the radar system, a team of NASA scientists discovered an abandoned Cold War-era US nuclear base in the thickness of the Greenland ice sheet. This was reported on May 13 by The Wall Street Journal.

According to the newspaper, the Camp Century base was discovered in the spring of 2024, when scientists were testing a new radar device capable of seeing through ice. Under a layer of snow, they came across a network of tunnels and structures that turned out to be a long-abandoned outpost.

The base was partially built in 1959, at the height of the Cold War. However, the United States decided to abandon the project in 1967, having determined that the ice sheet was too unstable to launch missiles.

According to the WSJ, the facility was designed to accommodate at least 600 intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

In December last year, US President Donald Trump said that for the United States, ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Prior to that, he expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was refused. In 2025, Trump was also told that the island was not for sale and would not be, but Denmark could cooperate more with the United States.
