Germany needs to restore the operation of nuclear power plants and resume natural gas imports from Russia in order to cope with the industrial crisis. This was stated on May 14 by Alice Weidel, co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, during a discussion following a speech by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in the Bundestag.

According to her, it is impossible to achieve economic recovery without reliable and affordable energy supply. She stressed that this is possible only through a different energy policy.

"It's time to end the energy transition. It is necessary to actively accelerate the return to nuclear and coal-fired power, cheap natural gas from Russia," said the politician, whose speech was broadcast on the Bundestag website.

In addition, Weidel noted a rapid decline in industrial production in Germany against the background of increased energy prices. She stressed that such a situation contributes to the growth of unemployment.

Bloomberg reported on May 5 that the European Commission (EC) intends to propose a ban on gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027. It was clarified that European countries are going to take this measure because they seek to sever relations with Russia, which was once their largest energy supplier.

In turn, the Reuters news agency reported that the EU is unlikely to be able to terminate contracts for the supply of Russian gas. Agnieszka Eson, an energy lawyer, stressed that the remaining Russian supply channels continue to operate smoothly after 2022.
