Strong, well-nourished plants resist diseases better. One of the most affordable ways to improve the soil is to use compost, an expert from the online hypermarket All Tools told Izvestia on May 15.<url>" Maxim Sokolov.

"This natural fertilizer can be made with your own hands from what usually goes into the trash: food waste, grass, leaves, twigs, eggshells. All this rots over time and turns into a useful humus, which is suitable for almost any plant," the expert noted.

According to him, to simplify the process, you can use a composter — a plastic container with ventilation. It does not smell and allows you to take away the finished humus. There are models ranging from 100 to 800 liters, some are easy to disassemble.

"In addition to organics, do not forget about mineral fertilizers. Nitrogen is needed for the growth of greenery, phosphorus for roots, and potassium for fruits. It is important to observe the dosage: excess can be harmful. For example, too much phosphorus accelerates plant aging, and an overabundance of potassium prevents the absorption of other useful elements," Sokolov explained.

He specified that siderates would also be a favorable solution. They are sold in the form of seeds, usually in packages of 0.5—1 kg. The volume is enough to sow from 1 to 2 acres, depending on the crop.

"The main thing is to have time to sow the plot at least two to three weeks before planting the main crops, so that the plants have time to grow and give effect. For the spring season, such siderates as mustard, rapeseed, clover, sweet clover, oats, phacelia and peas are especially suitable. After mowing, the greenery is not removed, but embedded in the ground. This creates the effect of natural fertilizer: the soil gets organic matter, becomes more friable and breathable, and because of this it is more difficult for weeds to germinate," the expert added.

Earlier, on April 21, Associate Professor of the Department of General Biology and Bioecology at the State University of Education Roman Oparin told Izvestia how to protect plants during the cold snap in spring. He advised wrapping the plants in non-woven fabric or agrofibre, which will help them survive the stress of the weather. You should also make a kind of antifreeze — it is good to water the ground under the plantings so that it remains warm.
