Witkoff confirms joint trip with Rubio to talks on Ukraine in Istanbul
US President Donald Trump's special Envoy Steven Witkoff has confirmed that he and United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio will travel to Istanbul for talks on Ukraine. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on May 14.
"Witkoff announced that he and Secretary of State Rubio will travel to Istanbul <...> for Ukrainian-Russian talks," the statement said.
The Special Envoy named Friday, May 16, as the date of the visit, while contacts between the Russian Federation and Ukraine are scheduled to begin a day earlier.
Trump announced on May 13 that Rubio and other US representatives would fly to Istanbul for talks on Ukraine. He noted that he expects good results from the negotiations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated direct talks on May 11, inviting the Ukrainian side to resume dialogue on May 15 in Istanbul three years later. Trump, in turn, called on Ukraine to immediately accept Russia's proposal.
