The Tbilisi City Court has arrested former Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Okruashvili after he refused to pay bail. This was reported on May 14 by the local agency Interpressnews.

"Okruashvili deliberately failed to pay the bail set by the court, in connection with which the prosecution filed a motion for the bail of 20 thousand lari ($7.3 thousand — Ed.) to be changed to detention," the publication says.

Okruashvili is accused of complicity in the criminal actions of officials from the administration of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in the period from 2003 to 2012.

On May 12, a court in Georgia sentenced former President Mikheil Saakashvili to nine years in prison in a case of embezzlement of about 9 million lari (more than $3.2 million). Saakashvili was charged with embezzlement of state funds in 2014. According to the Prosecutor General's Office, a significant part of this amount was spent in 2009-2012 on the personal needs of the politician, including luxury goods.

Earlier, on February 5, the Georgian parliament approved the creation of a commission to study crimes committed during Saakashvili's rule as president (2004-2007, 2008-2013). It was noted that 83 out of 150 deputies supported the adoption of the draft.
