Prolonged sleep can lead to headaches. Natalia Zolotareva, cardiologist at the SM Clinic, announced this on May 14 in an interview with Gazeta.Ru».

According to the expert, there are six main causes of headaches after a long sleep. The first category includes the failure of circadian rhythms. This occurs due to the body's habituation to a certain schedule. If a person sleeps 2-3 hours longer than usual, this leads to the production of hormones (for example, serotonin and melatonin), which can trigger migraines.

The doctor called dehydration the second cause of headache after a long sleep. During seven to nine hours of sleep, moisture leaves the body through breathing and perspiration. If there is no water in the body before bedtime, there is a lack of fluid, which leads to discomfort and narrowing of the blood vessels of the brain.

The third reason, according to the cardiologist, is circulatory problems. Prolonged exposure to the same position worsens blood flow in the neck and shoulders, which leads to muscle tension that develops into a headache.

The fourth cause of the headache was hypoglycemia. According to Zolotareva, skipping dinner or having a light snack before going to bed lowers blood glucose levels. This will lead to depletion of the body's reserves, and after that — a "hungry" headache.

Other causes of headaches include sleep quality and caffeine withdrawal.

According to the expert, in order to avoid headaches after prolonged sleep, it is necessary to follow the regime: go to bed and get up at the same time, even on weekends, drink a glass of warm water an hour before bedtime, create a comfortable sleeping area and ventilate the room more often.

She also advised not to skip dinner, avoid heavy food and alcohol, which overload the body, do a morning workout — after waking up, do light exercises or stretching to improve blood circulation and relieve muscle tension.

If the headaches recur, you should consult a doctor. Perhaps the cause is apnea, neurological disorders, or vitamin deficiency (for example, group B).

"A long sleep should not become a torment. A balanced regime, attention to nutrition and a comfortable environment in the bedroom will help you wake up refreshed and without headaches. Remember, it's not the amount of sleep that matters, but its quality," Zolotareva concluded.

On May 14, Cyril Lakhmai, a cardiovascular surgeon at SM Clinic, told Izvestia about the causes of blood clots and the possibilities to recognize this dangerous pathology. He clarified that red blood clots are the culprits of such common diseases as varicose veins and thrombophlebitis, which cause inflammatory processes in blood vessels and their deformation.
