The term "leaky gut syndrome" does not exist. Natalia Kharchenko, a gastroenterologist at the European Medical Center (EMC), told about this on May 14.

"The term "leaky gut syndrome" is not used in clinical practice.<...> This is an incorrect and simplified designation of a real, but much more complex biological process," Kharchenko said "Газете.Ru ".

According to her, spreading this myth can be dangerous for a person who starts self-treatment of a non-existent diagnosis, which will lead to a loss of time and an aggravation of real diseases.

Popular symptoms attributed to "leaky intestines" include stool disorders, bloating, rash, itching, chronic fatigue, and others. They may indicate signs of real diseases.

According to Kharchenko, in the scientific and clinical environment, instead of the term "leaky gut syndrome", the following concepts are used: increased intestinal permeability, dysfunction of the intestinal barrier, as well as specific diagnoses in which it can occur.

"For example, celiac disease. This is an autoimmune reaction to gluten, in which the mucosa of the small intestine is damaged and the absorption of nutrients is disrupted," said the gastroenterologist.

She also added that inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) are accompanied by inflammation, pain, and stool disorders. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder with abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in stool.

"This is a common diagnosis, which is also often disguised as a non-existent "leaky intestine." Therefore, if such symptoms occur, it is important to consult a doctor," Kharchenko concluded.

On May 14, Cyril Lakhmai, a cardiovascular surgeon at SM Clinic, told Izvestia about the causes of blood clots and the possibilities to correctly recognize this dangerous pathology. He clarified that red blood clots are the culprits of such common diseases as varicose veins and thrombophlebitis, which cause inflammatory processes in blood vessels and their deformation.
