In a hundred clothes: Cannes opened with a scandal

The main film festival in the world began with scandals. For the general public, the main one is the sudden ban on "naked" dresses on the red carpets of Cannes. For professionals, this is a message about high duties on foreign films in the United States, now everyone is waiting for some kind of response statements to be made in Cannes. But from the very first day, even before the official opening, political slogans were heard there. The Izvestia correspondent went to the Croisette embankment, learned about the plans of the Yakut directors, appreciated the outfits of the stars and asked famous compatriots about the emotions of the opening screening.
Yakuts conquer Cannes
For Izvestia, the festival began with a meeting with the main stars of Yakut cinema, directors Dmitry Davydov and Stepan Burnashev. Both are laureates of major domestic festivals and awards and are very successful at the Yakut box office. They came to the Croisette (Davydov had to travel for three days) not to watch movies, but to look for partners for their own projects: in parallel with the festival, the world's largest film market is taking place here, Davydov and Burnashev are official participants. In an interview with Izvestia, they talked about their projects.
Davydov brought the Lullaby project. "It's a Yakut drama," he says. — I want to find foreign partners for it in order to conduct this project more competently. Not to make a small Yakut movie, but to work it out more widely." Davydov also said that he has several ideas for films that he could make even in Europe, including in English.
Stepan Burnashev said that he has a finished film, which he will offer to distributors and sales agencies. "This is the Penthouse I rented in Malaysia. This is an international project that I will try to find buyers for. And I will meet with different producers for my future ideas," the director noted.
Standing ovation for the terrorists
Not everyone liked the presence (and noticeable) of Russian-speaking guests. The Cannes Film Festival 2025 is also turning out to be more politicized than ever: for example, the Ambassador of Ukraine to France was invited to it, and girls with yellow and blue flags greeted him in the hall. They also applauded the Ukrainian military, including even members of the Azov terrorist organization banned in Russia, who found a place on stage and at the microphone.
So, an "old acquaintance" of the Russian media was noticed among the guests: Yulia Paevskaya with the call sign Tyra. She served in Azov as the head of the medical service. In Mariupol, Tyra was captured and subsequently exchanged for the Russian military. In Cannes, Tyra was probably a symbol of Europe's love of freedom. The name of Bernard-Henri Levy, modestly called a "journalist" and a "director", was also mentioned more than once, although he is better known as a political strategist and designer of color revolutions — coups in a number of European and post-Soviet countries are attributed to him. Ukrainians in Cannes even announced the awarding of awards from the Armed Forces of Ukraine to this prominent figure in the film industry.
There will be no naked people
Just a day before the opening, when the image of each star of the upcoming gala evening, as a rule, has already been approved with stylists and is waiting in the wings on a hanger, the organizers, for reasons of decency, announced a ban on "naked dresses" at the events of the show. Perhaps the sudden dress code could force some to urgently look for an alternative.
The status of the main fans of outfits that barely hide (and sometimes not at all) intimate parts of the body, deserved by supermodels. Over the years, Irina Shayk, Naomi Campbell, Kendall Jenner, and Bella Hadid have shone in provocative images on the Cote d'Azur. The latter, for example, made a splash here last time, appearing on the carpet of the movie "Three Floors" in a black tight-fitting Schiaparelli dress, exposing her breasts. It was covered by a massive sculptural decoration of gilded brass in the form of bronchi. Hadid then chose an even more daring outfit for the premiere of the biographical drama "The Apprentice. Trump's Ascent" is a transparent Saint Laurent dress on a naked body. This time, the model wore an elegant black floor-length dress.
Irina Shayk was one of the first to appear on the red carpet in a black dress with small white polka dots from the Armani Privé archive collection with a full skirt and open shoulders. Model Alessandra Ambrosio preferred a bright color scheme and wore a green Zuhair Murad dress, although she allowed herself a deep slit in the skirt. Their colleague Heidi Klum appeared in a pink Elie Saab with a long fluffy train, although this was also banned: the organizers asked to avoid such outfits that could interfere with the movement of other guests and make it difficult to sit in the theater.
The outfit of the chairman of the jury, French actress Juliette Binoche, corresponded to the dress code as much as possible: white trousers and a hooded top. The images of men left the audience without surprises, except that Jeremy Strong (read our interview with him about the film "The Apprentice", which was in the Cannes competition last year) distinguished himself by the colors of the suit — coral. Quentin Tarantino, last year's winner Sean Baker, who won the Palme d'Or for "Anora," and their colleague Claude Lelouch also appeared at the opening, with a shot from his film "A Man and a Woman" becoming the poster for this year's screening.
Russians at the 78th Cannes Film Festival
Our compatriots also became guests of the 78th Cannes Film Festival. Among them are the founders of the YANINA Couture Fashion House, Yulia and Daria Yanina. To hit the red carpet, Daria opted for a form-fitting black floor-length dress with accent embroidery of stones on the open back. The image from the Phoenix SS'24 couture collection was previously presented at the Paris Haute Couture Week. Julia appeared in a unique black ensemble: a jacket and a hand-embroidered dress, referring to the motifs of the same collection.
The actress Alexandra Kiselyova came to Cannes for the first time. She brought several images from domestic brands with her.
— I decided to proudly and joyfully support Russian designers. My outings at Galina Podzolko promise to be the epitome of femininity, supporting Russian motifs in fabrics. And the Vassa&Co brand outlets are, as always, about the desire to emphasize my natural rigor and audacity. The new introductory information about the dress code surprised me, but given the recent very outspoken appearances of the stars, it might have been worth putting such a restriction. Nevertheless, there should be a framework for a celebration that was created in the name of art such as cinema. Such images were not included in my plans, so I easily move according to the planned plan," she told Izvestia.
TV presenter Ekaterina Mtsituridze wore an elegant evening dress by Russian designer Yana Raskovalova, complementing the image with jewelry from the fashion house.
"I consider it more than timely that the organizers have introduced a new, stricter dress code on the carpet,— Ekaterina Mtsituridze said in an interview with Izvestia. — In the past two years, "naked dresses" have become vulgar and created a slightly different atmosphere in Cannes, which could correspond to the level of the number one festival. It's one thing to have a seductive light nude, but the other is vulgar images like from porn or a freak show.
How was the opening
Juliette Binoche, the chairman of the jury, noted in her welcoming speech that art is the main thing for her, because it will remain, and the rest, including politics and other topics of concern to people, will fade into the background and be forgotten. And they will be remembered by the way they show them in the movies.
Separately, at the opening of Cannes, they remembered David Lynch, who passed away this year, for whom art was also always the most important thing. In his honor, Mylene Farmer sang a soulful ballad for the audience, and the festival showed fragments of his film "Wild at Heart," which many years ago won Lynch the Palme d'Or.
But the main event of the opening was the presentation of the honorary Palme d'Or to Robert De Niro. Leonardo DiCaprio was commissioned to do this, and the audience greeted him standing up and, perhaps, even more enthusiastically than De Niro himself. DiCaprio said that long before they met on the set of the movie "The Life of that Guy," De Niro was everything to him, an example of an ideal artist who not only gets used to the role, but physically changes for her, goes through a complete transformation. He remembered watching "Taxi Driver," "Deer Hunter," "Raging Bull."
— Let's not forget that he taught several generations to look in the mirror and talk to themselves. Let's not dissemble, each of us has done it at least once," DiCaprio joked about the famous scene from Taxi Driver.
Of course, in cutting the iconic scenes with De Niro, which were later shown, this was the key and the longest. It seems DiCaprio guessed right. Another thing is that there were practically no films under the age of thirty among them. But the audience was so warmed up that by the time De Niro came out, she was already ecstatic. Is there anyone in the world who doesn't adore De Niro?
He stood on stage in front of a hysterical audience and sniffed with emotion. And he only said softly, "Thank you, thank you." He was smiling and holding a box with a branch. And if he had just stood there for another hour, it would have been possible to close the festival, because nothing brighter would have happened.
In his speech, De Niro recalled how he first came to Cannes with Scorsese's "Evil Streets" and how he later traveled with other paintings, was president of the jury, was just an honored guest, and the last time he brought Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" here.
De Niro said that Donald Trump was fighting against art with his laws, and then moved on to the scandalous duty on foreign films. The actor recalled how he and his entire generation studied cinematography at the European cinema. "Today and the next 11 days we will demonstrate our firmness and our firmness to our main principles — freedom, equality and fraternity," De Niro said the last words, of course, in French to thunderous applause.
And then Quentin Tarantino came on stage. He yelled that the 78th Cannes International Film Festival was open, threw the microphone on stage and immediately left. However, then he went out with De Niro, Farmer and all the stars for a group photo as a keepsake. The audience went wild. Cannes has opened in such a way that this mood will last for a long time.
