- The lawyer appreciated the investigation launched by the European Parliament into the trip of deputies to the Russian Federation
The European Parliament (EP) cannot revoke the mandate of deputies who visited the Russian Federation to participate in events on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Lawyer Maria Yarmush told Izvestia about this on May 13.
"The investigation will begin and end. Maybe [other MEPs] will speak at their sessions and condemn the trip of these MPs to the Russian Federation. But no more than that," she said.
Yarmush also ruled out the possibility of depriving members of the European Parliament who attended Moscow Victory Day of their mandate. The expert explained that such a consequence can occur if a deputy is found guilty of, for example, corruption or discrimination.
"This is an elected position. It is impossible to deprive members of the European Parliament of their mandate because they went to Russia and participated in events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory. There is no crime here. A deputy can lose his mandate only if he is found guilty of committing a crime, as well as in cases of unauthorized resignation and death," the lawyer explained.
On May 13, Cyprus MP and blogger Fidias Panayiotou posted on his page on the social network X (ex. Twitter) that the EP has launched an investigation into the trip of a group of MEPs to Russia on Victory Day.
On the same day, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yevgeny Ivanov said that this was evidence of a crisis of democracy in Europe.
On May 9, more than 25 foreign leaders, as well as military personnel from countries friendly to Russia and foreign delegations, became guests of the parade on Red Square. On May 8, Der Spiegel magazine announced the intention of five members of the European Parliament to come to the Russian capital to celebrate the Victory. It was noted that they were talking about deputies from the Czech Republic, Cyprus and Slovakia, as well as two German members of the Sarah Wagenknecht Union for Reason and Justice (BSW) faction.
