When Warhorse Studios released the first installment of Kingdom Come: Deliverance in 2018, it was a breath of fresh air for a gaming market oversaturated with fantasy RPGs. The second part, released this year, continued to adhere to historical accuracy and careful work with sources. Skill leveling, realistic combat, and weapons — few people have been able to achieve this level of consistency with materials. Nevertheless, there are several decent games whose creators have studied scientific works as well as the developers of Deliverance II. Details can be found in the Izvestia article.

How was it

The map and story content of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II are twice as large as in the first part of the game, and offer users not only new lands of the Czech Kingdom, but also a deeper integration of historical events. Among them is the civil war between Wenceslaus IV and Sigismund of Luxembourg, which is considered one of the most unstable periods in the history of Central Europe.

The studio consulted with historians again, recreating castles, villages and costumes based on preserved drawings and archaeological data. Even dialogues and everyday speech were adapted from the chronicles and literary sources of the XV century. The gameplay is the most authentic realities of the Middle Ages: to live, you need to at least eat and wash.

The developers of Rockstar Games have created a real ode to the Wild West, which has become one of the most historically verified action games. The action takes place at a critical milestone in American history. The frontier, the border of the developed territories, has already disappeared, active industrialization, the construction of railways, and the telegraph are underway. The former free lands are turning into states, and cowboys, hunters, and criminals are becoming outcasts.

The main characters of the series are figures of a transitional era, opposed to the advancing orderly state, law and capital. Rockstar spent more than eight years developing the second part, involving consultants on Western history, weapons, everyday life and language of the late 19th century, as well as scientists and ethnographers of Native American peoples, archival materials, newsreels, recordings of trials and newspaper clippings. Even the structure of the railroads, weather conditions, and the location of the flora in the games correspond to the geography of the Great Plains, Appalachia, and the southern United States at that time.

The Crusader Kings series covers the entire Middle Ages, and the earliest period from which to start the game is the Viking Age. This is one of the best historical strategies that gives you the opportunity to become the founder of a dynasty, rule, form alliances and unleash wars with real historical figures.

Medieval Dynasty

Medieval Dynasty can be considered a hybrid of several genres at once — survival, RPG, urban planning simulator and life simulator. The game takes the user to early Medieval Europe, where the main character, an ordinary peasant named Rasimir, escapes from the war and tries to start everything from scratch. Fighting is not in the foreground here: everyday life, seasonal cycles and the struggle for a place in the sun are in focus. The player's goal is to create their own dynasty.

God of War

Developer: Santa Monica Studio

When it was released: 2018

What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4

The God of War series is famous for its spectacular battles, tragic characters and cinematic scope. Unlike Kingdom Come: Deliverance, it relies not on history, but on folklore. Since 2018, developers have rebuilt the foundation of the game world, making mythology not just a backdrop, but a central tool for storytelling and game design. After the completion of the Greek arch, Scandinavian culture took over the series.

Creative director Corey Barlog stated that he was looking for folklore material that would not be as widely disseminated as Hellenic, had a rich moral depth, and was suitable for the story of fatherhood and inner redemption. Scandinavian mythology with Ragnarok and the complex relationship between the gods was perfect.

Mount & Blade is not exactly fantasy, but the series takes place on the fictional continent of Calradia. The studio did not recreate specific battles or countries, but developed a model of the world based on real structures, armies, architecture and political mechanisms of the VI–XI centuries.

The developers were inspired by late antiquity and the early Middle Ages, the era of the formation of barbarian kingdoms and Latin-Germanic mixed societies, the nomadic cultures of Eurasia, Scandinavian, Byzantine and Arab civilizations.

Pentiment

Developer: Obsidian Entertainment

When it was released: 2022

What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch

Pentiment tells the story of Andreas Mahler, an artist-engraver from Nuremberg, who works in a monastery scriptorium in the fictional Bavarian town of Tassing in the early 16th century. The hero finds himself embroiled in a murder investigation, going through religious conflicts, social upheavals and secrets of the past.

Josh Sawyer, a fan of history and linguistics, led the project and consulted with Reformation specialists, printmakers, and archivists. The game is stylized as medieval manuscripts, miniatures, and woodcuts, and uses real German, Latin, and Church Slavonic vocabulary.
